Matéria FlightGlobal:

A Boeing 747-400F operated by South Korea's Asiana Airlines is missing in the sea off the country's Jeju Island. The aircraft, with the registration HL-7604 (pictured below), took off on a regular cargo service from Seoul's Incheon airport to Shanghai Pudong airport in China at 03:05h local time. Around one hour later, some 76nm (140km) from Jeju, the crew reported "mechanical difficulties" and attempted to divert to Jeju's airport, said an Asiana spokesman. Shortly after, radio contact was lost and the aircraft disappeared from radars. Asiana officials informed the South Korean coast guard, who deployed ships to the sea off Jeju to investigate.

Matéria The Korean Times:

A cargo plane operated by Asiana Airlines, South Korea's second-largest flagship carrier, crashed into the sea off Jeju Island early Thursday, killing two, the Coast Guard said. Debris of the Boeing-744 aircraft, which departed from Incheon International Airport at 3:05 a.m. heading for China's Pudong, was found in waters about 107 kilometers west of the city of Jeju by a Coast Guard patrol boat at 6:40 a.m., the Coast Guard said. The Asiana plane with two pilots disappeared from radar at 4:09 a.m. and crashed about 20 minutes later while returning to Jeju International Airport after reporting some mechanical trouble, officials said. Officials at Asiana and the transportation ministry said the crash may have been caused by an in-flight fire, noting that the plane was carrying inflammable materials in its 58-ton cargo. (Yonhap)

Asiana Airlines (020560) Inc., South Korea’s second-largest carrier, said one of its cargo freighters crashed into the sea south of Jeju island this morning after problems with the controls. The Boeing Co. (BA) 747-400 aircraft was carrying two crewmembers and 58 tons of cargo to Shanghai from South Korea’s Incheon International Airport, the airline said in an e-mailed statement. The plane was heading for Jeju when communications were cut at 4:11 a.m., about an hour after takeoff, Asiana said. Rescue workers are searching for the crewmembers and the airplane’s black-box flight recorder, which may help determine the cause of the accident, the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs said. The airline fell the most in more than four months in Seoul trading following the crash, its first since 1993. “The crash may damage Asiana’s reputation if the airline is found to be responsible,” said Kang Seong Jin, an analyst at Seoul-based Tong Yang Securities Inc. Insurance will likely cover the lost cargo and plane, limiting direct costs, he said.

There may have been a fire on board before the crash, the transport ministry said in a statement. Asiana is focusing on the search efforts and doesn’t have immediate estimates of losses or damages, Jason Kim, a spokesman for the airline, said by phone. It’s too early to speculate on the cause of the crash, he said. The plane was carrying technology products, paint and other liquids. The airline dropped 4.7 percent, the most since March 14, to close at 11,050 won in Seoul trading. Korean Air Lines Co., the nation’s biggest airline, gained 0.2 percent. Asiana had nine 747 freighters and a 767 cargo plane at the end of March, according to its website. The company’s sales from its freight business increased 3.2 percent in the first quarter to 3.21 billion won ($3 million), accounting for 26 percent of the total. Matéria Boston.com:

A pilot aboard an Asiana Airlines cargo plane that crashed Thursday in waters off a southern South Korean resort island reported a fire just before losing contact with air traffic workers, an official said. The pilot yelled "Cargo fire!" and "Emergency!" about 10 minutes before the plane disappeared from radar screens, according to an air traffic official who declined to be named because the investigation was ongoing. The plane also signaled an emergency to Jeju International Airport on the resort island, where it was trying to land, the official said. The South Korean pilot, identified by the airline as Choi Sang-ki, was flying a Boeing-747 with a co-pilot, transporting computers, semiconductors, resin solution and paint among other items to Pudong in China, the airline said.

Asiana Airlines said the cargo had been loaded in line with international air transport regulations. Five coast guard patrol boats and four helicopters searched the area for signs of the pilot and the co-pilot, Jeju coast guard spokesman Choi Kyu-mo said. The coast guard recovered part of a wing with an Asiana Airlines logo on it, life jackets and parts of a pilot seat, the coast guard said in a statement. The plane took off from South Korea's Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, according to the airline. Asiana officials got a report early Thursday morning from the pilot that the plane was having mechanical difficulties and would try to make its way to the Jeju island's airport, said Jason Kim, a spokesman for Asiana. Officials then lost contact with the plane and asked the South Korean coast guard to investigate, Kim said. The airline also sent its own emergency specialists to the area.

South Korea has been lashed with extraordinarily heavy rain this week, with landslides and floods killing dozens and causing havoc. Kim said it was unclear whether the weather was a factor. Coast guard officials said there was no rain in the area but stronger-than-normal wind. North and South Korea are in a tense military standoff across their heavily armed border, but there was nothing to indicate that the crash had any military connection. Asiana Airlines was in the news last month when two South Korean marines fired rifles at an Asiana plane carrying 119 people. South Korea's military later apologized, saying the marines mistook the plane for a North Korean military aircraft. The military said it planned to strengthen training so troops can better distinguish civilian planes. Officials said the plane wasn't in range of the rifle fire.

O site FlightGlobal acaba de colocar na web uma matéria dizendo que havia baterias de LITHIUM na carga do 747 Cargo da Asiana:

A Boeing 747-400F operated by South Korea's Asiana Airlines was carrying electronic products and liquids when it crashed in sea off Jeju Island. The electronic products comprised mobile phones, liquid crystal displays and light-emitting diodes, said an Asiana spokesman. Some of the products had lithium batteries, while the liquids included paints and resins. He added that the cargo was in accordance with IATA regulations. While there is no immediate evidence that the cargo contributed to the accident, lithium batteries are considered a potentially hazardous cargo owing to the risk they pose of in-flight fire. The UPS 747-400F which crashed in Dubai in September last year had been transporting lithium batteries when the aircraft suffered a fire in cruise and attempted to divert.

Asiana said its aircraft took off on regular cargo service from Seoul's Incheon airport to Shanghai Pudong airport in China at 02:47 local time. At 04:11 local time the crew reported "control problems at an altitude of 7,600ft, and was diverted to Jeju International Airport when contact was lost with the aircraft". At 04:45 local time, a coast guard rescue unit was dispatched. At 05:30 local time, a state of emergency was declared by Asiana. An oil slick, apparently from the aircraft, was discovered at 06:10 local time, and the coast guard rescue unit discovered aircraft debris at 06:50 local time. "We are still waiting for a report from the coast guard and our staff," said the spokesman. "Some debris and oil has been spotted floating in the sea, but the aircraft has not been found yet." The spokesman said that there were two crew, a pilot and co-pilot, in the missing aircraft. The airframe was built in 2006 and has clocked 26,300h, as shown in Flightglobal's ACAS data. The aircraft is powered by four GE CF6-80C2 engines. Asiana operates five 747-400Fs, four 747-400BDSFs, and two 747-400 combis.
